Major updates and an upcoming charity stream

So, apparently my last devlog didn't post and I just did not notice. Apologies about that but that was for the February 2nd update and I'm

proud to be updating again during the same month. So for anyone that missed it this is gonna be a big update. Untitled Dungeon Game launched with the 12 playbooks and was 50 pages- it was a proof of concept. Since unveiling the game as Heroes by Hearthlight and discovering its themes beyond fantasy I have completed the first three chapters. The current page count is at 123. So what have I added? Chapter 1 defines how to play Forged in the Dark and contains a good chunk of the Blades SRD. I had to make sure everything was phrased to how I like, that the tone was changed for the setting, and that the correct terms were used for this game. Then I added in the rules that I've added:

  • Bane Clocks- Clocks that measure damage over time. This allows you to throw a ticking clock at a player rather than straight up harm- if it ticks all the way down they will take the consequence. Until then they have the opportunity to try and get rid of the Bane clock, giving them a new objective.
  • Doom, Advantage, Powers- All were present in the game since the opening but have been written in more detail.
  • Protection & Immunity- Representing defenses that players need specific workarounds for. An easy example would be attacking a Werewolf who has Protection (Silver Bypasses), if you don't attack them with Silver weapons then the highest die from your pool is removed after rolling the attack. Immunity cuts the top two dice from your pool. These can be really rough but can force players to come at threats from new angles or spend resources flashing back or acquiring assets to deal with them.
  • The Faction Game: In depth rules for how the enemy factions grow in power and how the players can thwart their plots.  Sieges replace the gang war mechanics from Blades. Now an Overlord and its forces can attack the settlement and potentially damage it or its populace.
  • Settlement Development: Replaces the Crew Map and basic Crew upgrades. Instead you make connections with the people in your Settlement and are able to spend time/money to aid people and unlock their support abilities.

Chapter 2 is character creation and most of it was covered in the initial release.

Chapter 3 is about creating your Realm, the setting for your campaign. Outside your settlement are four regions you can roll up and fill with foes and Overlords plotting your settlement's destruction. I've been playtesting these rules for an upcoming charity stream and I feel they are really singing and I'll be sad to see this town go after this stream. This chapter covers the realm generation, rules for the settlement, as well as advancement options for the party and the settlement. I also added potential npc contacts for each location in your town and didn't realize how much work I'd put in until a friend pointed out that I'd made 60 dudes in one afternoon on a lark.

Chapters 4 and 5 are next and cover running adventures and downtime. When I reach that the game will be in what I consider to be a truly playable state. They are the next big goal and I am also reworking some character sheets to release with it.

Now, full transparency: This game is a lot of work and it is going to be coming off pay what you want. When I get to the chapter 4/5 update the game will cost $15. I will be raising the price a final time when the game is complete, probably either 20 or 25 but I'm not sure yet.

When I'm not working on the current chapter I'm slowly working on the game's bestiary, The Foe Folio. Which I think will be something a lot of people enjoy. I am also working on more doodles to fill the pages with. The image at the top of the post is one I made for the upcoming stream of our four overlords and it now has a place of honor in the Overlord section of the book.

That's gonna be all for now as I've worked well past midnight on the update today. But I did wanna invite anyone who was interested to check out the charity stream. Here is the poster with all the info. I'll be running the game from 8PM to Midnight EST. Hope to see y'all there but if you can't make it then please check out another game if you can and donate if you are able!
